Adjusting to life with recently diagnosed three year old with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (as told by his mom, Michelle)

11.21.2005

yay! no decadron. no yucky drugs. only his antibiotic & antifungal which are cake!!! caleb had a great day at the dr's office today. had to put him on a behavioral chart day before yesterday cause his behavior has been out of control (talking back, yelling, oppositional defiance). he even let the nurse access him w/out crying. you better believe he earned his sticker for that!!! i'm so proud of him. he was a big boy today. he even behaved at the mall. he was supposed to have a spinal tap today. there was a mixup & i thought we were gonna have to spend the night (he's supposed to go w/out food/drink for 6 hrs for the spinal tap but he ate breakfast). since his counts were too low they couldn't do the procedure anyway. the downside is that we have to go back next monday. his counts just fluctuate. the cancer drugs he takes keeps them low, it's just part of the process. i have to keep reminding myself that the drugs are good..that's what's keeping him with us. people will ask how he's doing from time to time & i just reply he's doing great, which he is...but i never go into detail about how he has his ups & downs. gratefully, not too down-just w/ his behavior and his moods. a couple of weeks ago his energy was low...i wonder if that's why his counts were low-maybe at that time he caught something & his body was fighting it...he had looked slightly pale to me & not as hyper. the main thing is no fever. fevers scare the crap out of me.
